How It Works

Once you join the program, you will be directed to the members’ area. From there, you can select and choose whether you want to train using power or heart rate. You can then select the training phase that best suits your current needs, with options including Base, Build, Conditioning, Peak, and In-Season Maintenance training.

The man in jersey is sitting on a mountain bike with a race number "42". They are smiling and posing for the camera, with the man in the jacket giving a thumbs up. The background shows a stage, colorful pennant flags, and other people.

Coach Support.

Throughout your time on the program, coach support is available. This is primarily delivered via our private WhatsApp group, where you can ask questions, receive guidance, and benefit from ongoing discussion. If you have a question you would prefer not to ask in the group, cannot find the answer in the Frequently Asked Questions, or require more personalised support, you can contact me directly via email, and I will respond personally.

Phases Of Training

  • A person mountain biking on a trail in a wooded area wearing a helmet and protective gear.

    Base Phase 12 Weeks

Maybe you want to race faster. Maybe you want to stop blowing up on lap two. Or maybe you've spent years grinding the gym while your aerobic engine sits untouched. Whatever it is, everything begins here. The base phase is where elite enduro athletes separate from everyone else not on race day, but in the quiet months before it.

  • A person riding a mountain bike on a rugged mountain trail with mountains and a clear blue sky in the background.

    Build Phase 12 Weeks

You've built the engine now it's time to find out how fast it goes. The build phase takes everything you developed over winter and starts converting it into speed. Intensity increases, efforts get sharper, and the work begins to feel like racing. This is where fitness becomes performance.

  • A mountain biker wearing a helmet, goggles, and gloves, riding through a muddy trail during a race.

    Conditioning Phase 6 Weeks

This is where the work gets specific. The conditioning phase bridges fitness and the bike sharpening the physical qualities that actually matter on trail. Power through technical sections, resilience across back-to-back stages, and the capacity to repeat efforts when it counts. Race season is close. It's time to feel like it.

  • Three men standing on a podium with medals, celebrating at a bike racing event, with a backdrop displaying event and sponsor logos.

    Peak Phase 6 Weeks

Everything you've built comes into focus. The volume drops, the intensity sharpens, and your body arrives at the form it's been working towards all season. This is the sharpening stone not the time to add more, but to let what's already there rise to the surface. You're ready. Now go race.

1-1 Coaching

One-to-one coaching at AO Athletes is built around your physiology, not a template. Every athlete begins with a full INSCYD metabolic profile, the most advanced field-based testing available, giving us an exact picture of your aerobic capacity, fat oxidation, lactate dynamics and VO2max. From that foundation, every session is prescribed specifically for you.

Training is delivered and monitored through TrainingPeaks, with biweekly check-ins to review progress, adjust load and keep you moving in the right direction. This is not a plan dropped in your inbox and forgotten. It is an ongoing coaching relationship designed to make you a faster, more resilient rider. Your coach, Jamie, holds a Level 4 Strength and Conditioning qualification and is currently completing an MSc in Sports and Performance Coaching at the University of Stirling, with research focused specifically on the physiological demands of elite enduro mountain biking. Every decision made in your programme is grounded in current applied sports science.

What is included:

  • Full INSCYD metabolic profile and physiological baseline assessment

  • Personalised training plan built around your physiology and race calendar

  • Training delivery and monitoring via TrainingPeaks

  • Biweekly check-ins to review data, adjust load and address any questions

  • HRV guided recovery monitoring

  • Direct coach access throughout

  • Science-led programming from a coach working with UCI World Cup and Scottish National level athletes

At Athlete Optimisation, my mission is simple: to raise the standard of performance in gravity sports. We’re here for the athletes who want more, more science, more precision, more results.
